A lot of people come in with pain deep around the shoulder blade, tightness under the scapula, limited shoulder rotation, or weakness when lifting the arm.
One muscle that can be involved is the subscapularis. It is one of the rotator cuff muscles and helps stabilize the shoulder joint and control internal rotation of the arm.
When the shoulder sits forward, the scapula loses good position, posture collapses, or the shoulder is overused, the muscles around the scapula can become overworked. That can create tightness, trigger points, weakness, poor control, and pain around the shoulder blade and front of the shoulder.
The important thing is not just to “dig into” the painful spot. You want to help the scapula sit and move better, then activate the shoulder correctly.
In this video, I show a simple trick using a stick and tennis ball.
Make a small opening in the tennis ball, place it securely on the end of the stick, and use it as a gentle pressure tool around the shoulder-blade area. Use light pressure, breathe, relax the shoulder, and then slowly lift the arm with the thumb pointing up.
The goal is gentle compression, better body awareness, and controlled movement — not aggressive pressure.
Be careful around the armpit, ribs, nerves, and the front of the shoulder. The subscapularis is deep, so this should never be sharp or painful.
If you have chronic shoulder pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, instability, or a previous rotator cuff injury, see a qualified specialist first.
Better scapula position. Better shoulder control. Better movement.
